Whilst I have been at Shrewsbury School for only a short time, I have already begun to understand what makes our school so special. Recently I have learned of the remarkable advances of the Foundation, which can be attributed directly to the tremendous support received from our parents and Old Salopians.
A priority of the Shrewsbury School Foundation is to provide bursarial support to qualified, means-tested applicants. We are passionate about opening 'life-changing' doors of opportunity to talented young men and women, who wish to study at Shrewsbury, but are prevented from doing so by very real financial constraints. In recent years the demand for bursarial support has steadily increased. This is a result of an unprecedented number of requests from some of the brightest and most talented pupils across the country and, to some extent, the unfortunate downturn in our economy. Nevertheless, Shrewsbury School, its parents and its alumni know that bursary-holders make a highly valued contribution to the Salopian community.
Some of our competitor schools are in the enviable position of having endowment funds from which to provide much-needed bursarial assistance and to carry out essential capital improvements. Shrewsbury School has no such endowment fund and the reality is that the schoool relies on the assistance of its parents and Old Salopians.
Today, the Foundation is facing a significant challenge in its ability to maintain Shrewsbury as a great school and to offer bursarial support to bright and talented pupils. This support can only be achieved in partnership with our alumni and our parents, all of whom share our commitment to the school. For those of you who have contributed to bursaries or other essential projects, please accept my heartfelt thanks. For those of you who are in a position to assist, but haven't, I urge you to think of the doors which your support could open for Shrewsbury School and for our pupils who would benefit directly.
